Component Location

The fuel charging and controls system consists of the components as shown in the illustration.

WARNING: DO NOT SMOKE, CARRY LIGHTED TOBACCO OR OPEN FLAME OF ANY TYPE WHEN WORKING ON OR NEAR ANY FUEL-RELATED COMPONENT. HIGHLY FLAMMABLE MIXTURES ARE ALWAYS PRESENT AND MAY BE IGNITED, RESULTING IN POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.

CAUTION: Use O-rings made of fuel-resistant material. Use of incorrect O-rings may result in fuel leakage. Do not reuse O-rings.

The Sequential Multiport Fuel Injection (SFI) system is classified as:

  • multi-point.
  • pulse time.
  • mass air flow-controlled.

Pressurized fuel supplied through a fuel injection supply manifold is pulsed through four fuel injectors.

The fuel injectors are mounted to the Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) assembly.

Fuel amounts are metered by the period of time (pulse width) the fuel injectors are energized by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) .

Throttle Body Components

CAUTI0N: Do not clean inside the throttle body or adjust the hard stop screw. The throttle body bore and plate are coated with a sludge-resistant coating. Any attempt to clean the bore and plate area will impair the effectiveness of the coating. Do not clean the bore and plate area of the throttle body.

The throttle body:

  • controls the air supply to the intake manifold by position of the throttle plate.
  • connects the accelerator cable and the speed control actuator cable (if equipped) to the throttle plate.
  • is not adjustable.
  • cannot be cleaned.

Fuel Injection Supply Manifold

The fuel injection supply manifold:

  • receives fuel from the fuel supply tube.
  • distributes fuel to the individual fuel injectors.

Fuel Injector

CAUTION: Use O-rings made of fuel-resistant material. Use of incorrect O-rings may result in fuel leakage. Do not reuse O-rings.

The fuel injectors:

  • are electrically operated by the PCM.
  • atomize the fuel as it is delivered.
  • are deposit-resistant. Do not clean.

Fuel Pressure Sensor

The fuel pressure sensor:

  • is located on the RH side of the fuel injection supply manifold downstream of the fuel injectors.
  • maintains fuel pressure to the fuel injectors based on intake manifold vacuum.
