87 Toyota Supra Turbo, Power Steering Maintenance
Q:
I have read that changing the power steering fluid and installing a filter are rather easy and affordable ways to prolong the life of a power steering system. If this is the case how do you change the fluid? How do you install the filter? I have a 1987 Toyota Supra Turbo and I am very eager to find out the answers to these questions. Thank you for your consideration.

A:You’re right; regular changing of the power steering fluid in your vehicle will extend the power steering assembly’s useful life. You just reminded me that two of my own vehicles are overdue for service.

Changing the power steering fluid is a simple procedure. There is a return hose from the power steering rack that enters a reservoir for the power steering system. The first step is to remove this hose and direct it into an oil catch pan. Be sure to block the return hose fitting on the power steering reservoir. Have an assistant start the engine and turn the steering to the right and left. At the same time pour power steering fluid into the reservoir to maintain its level, preventing air from entering the power steering system.

Watch the oil that is flowing into the oil catch pan. Once this oil appears to be to as clear as the oil being poured in, turn the engine off and reconnect the return hose to the reservoir. Restart the engine and check the oil level and inspect for leaks.

As for a filter for the power steering system, I’ve not seen any that I believe are worth installing. Regular flushing of the power steering system with good quality oil is all that should be needed.

Note: Not all vehicles take the same type of power steering fluid (oil). Be sure to check your Owner’s Manual for the correct power steering fluid for your application. Failure in taking this step can cause very expensive damage to the power steering system.
