90 Dodge Caravan, Shiftless and Brakeless
Q: Our 1990 Dodge Caravan has 115,000 miles. Lately when we start it up and put it into reverse we occasionally have trouble getting the gear. After a few seconds and possibly by reshifting, we could get it to go.

The other day I had an experience that made me consider that it might not be the transmission. Starting it up, after it had been sitting for an hour or so, I could not get ANY gear to engage. There were two oddities I noticed: 1 When the accelerator was depressed, it moved with normal pressure but there was NO ENGINE REVVING. It was the first time that this problem was this obvious. 2 The brake pedal was rock hard.

I shut the engine off and restarted it, and the brake returned to normal pressure; I was able to engage a gear. The only thing that didn't make sense was that all these incidents would occur with a cold engine, not hot. Any ideas?
