89 Subaru Justy, Transmission Problems
Q:
I have a 1989 Subaru Justy with the ECVT (Transmission). My question is when should I have the belts in the transmission replaced? I have 150,000 miles on this car and have noticed some hesitation (loss of power) on inclines especially in cold weather.

A: The belt drive transmission in your Justy is an engineering marvel, yet it will be a marvel if the engineer who designed it will ever get out of therapy. Your description is not of a belt problem, it's more like an engine performance problem. Due to the complexity of your vehicle's operating system I strongly recommend checking basics first: ignition system, filters etc. If the problem still remains, inspection of critical input switches and sensors to the transmission's computer should follow. The electromagnetic powder clutch makes use of a brush set that should be inspected but this requires removal of the starter gain access. Your Subaru's ECVT transmission requires only a qualified technician if service is needed.
