86 GMC Blazer, Too Hot to Trot
Q:
I own an '86 GMC Blazer. The truck is running hot. I flushed the radiator clean and it is still running hot. When I step on the accelerator, I notice the oil pressure gauge drops below 40 and the temperature goes up almost to the red zone. What should I do?

A: First, I'd verify your gauge readings. Your Blazer is equipped with electrically powered gauges which are not the most accurate and are known for being affected by electrical problems.

If the gauges are, in fact, accurate then the cooling system must be inspected more thoroughly. When the radiator was cleaned was it disassembled? Was coolant flow through the radiator checked?

What condition is the water pump in? Is it circulating coolant properly?

If the cooling system tests good, then there's the possibility of a more serious engine problem. But, start with the basics first.
