Jim Grant's Tech Tips '97 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, Check Engine Light, But Runs Great Q: The Check Engine Soon light keeps coming on my 97 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, but the car runs great. The local dealer said to tighten the gas cap. I purchased a new gas cap but the light stays on. I would appreciate any information you can give me. - Cheryl B. A: Whenever a customer calls with a check engine light on but says the engine is running good, I allows suggest checking the gas cap. 96 and new vehicles can/will turn the check engine light on for a loose gas cap. After the gas cap has been tightened, the vehicle has to be driven a few days before the computer is satisfied and will turn the light off. If the check engine light doesnt go off after a few days, then you should have a computer check performed. There are over a hundred reasons/problems that can cause a check engine light to turn on, even if the engine is running good. The only way to know is to ask the question of the computer.
