'00 Audi TT Quattro, Loud & Cupping Tires

Q: I’m on my third set of tires in 18K miles on a my 2000 Audi TT Roadster Quattro. The first set of tires were super soft and lasted only 6K miles of not really hard driving. The second set tires started to be extremely noisy with very little tread wear, to the point that when offered original replacement tires at a bargain, I jumped at the offer. The tires were silent for a while, but now they are beginning to get loud again. Can you tell me where the problem may be? Is it the 4 wheel drive?

A: It sounds as if a check of the alignment is in order. But the alignment on your vehicle is not something that just any alignment shop can perform. The suspension computer on your Audi has to be told or put into what is called the suspension service mode. This causes the suspension computer to lock the suspension at a specified level. After the alignment is performed and the vehicle is driven the suspension computer will return to normal operation. If the correct procedure is not followed, the vehicle cannot be aligned correctly. Also if any changes were made to the tie-rod height or steering rack, special tools will be required to align the vehicle.
