Jim Grant's Tech Tips
Chevy,
Oil Burning 454
Q: I just had my 454 Chevy engine rebuilt.
The oil is going somewhere and I'm not sure where. It's not in the radiator
and not on the ground. I can see it smoking but I use 1 quart per 300
miles of city driving. I heard that there are engine problems if your
car burns more than I quart between oil changes. It cost me $2600.00 for
this rebuilt. What could the problem be?
A: The
problem may be that the work performed on the engine was not done correctly.
A new or rebuilt engine may use some oil at first, but not at the level
you are describing! I suggest you go back to whoever rebuilt the engine
and make them aware of your oil consumption problems, "do not wait!",
and have the necessary steps taken to correct the problem. You spent a
good amount of money and clearly do not have a good product.
