Jim Grant's Tech Tips
96-’97
Chevy Suburbans, Good Bad or Indifferent
Q: I am currently looking at ‘96-97 Suburbans
with vortec engines. Most have 70k to 88K miles and range in price from
17K to 25K. My question is should I be concerned about a ‘97 model with
85k miles at a price of $18000 that is in good condition inside and out?
I don't know if I am overly concerned about the mileage. Some I’ve looked
at newer and older have had well over 100K and still ran fine.
A: The
only concern I would have for a vehicle of that age is if it had been
serviced correctly. A vehicle with 70K to 80k miles on the speed-o is
not a big deal in today’s world. I would recommend that you have the vehicle
checked over and inspected for any needed service or repairs before buying.
The Suburban is an urban assault vehicle that has a reputation for delivering
the goods. With proper care this is a 200k to 300k vehicle.
