Jim Grant's Tech Tips
'94 Chevy Pick-up, Water Pump Shock
Q:
I have a 94 Chevy Pick-up with a 5.7L engine. I have a slight leak
from the weep hole in the water pump. With only limited experience under
the hood (I change my own oil, filters, plugs, etc.), should I tackle
replacing the pump myself - or leave it to the pros? I would also like
to change the serpentine belt at the same time, same question posed.
I made the mistake
of standing when I got the estimate from the dealer ($300+) and the fall
almost killed me!
A:
A new water pump, serpentine belt, coolant, maybe some clamps
or a coolant hose with labor, sure makes short work of $300. As for performing
the work yourself? I am a firm believer that if you put your mind to it,
you can do the job. Whether or not itll be right the first time
is just the learning part.
