‘90 Chevy Corvette, Air Bag & Seat Belt Warning Light

Q: I just installed a Hypertech computer chip in my ‘90 Chevy Corvette coupe. Afterthe chip was installed, the warning light on the dash for the inflation restraintand the seat belt light stays on. The car runs fine and the chip does performwell. I took the hypertech chip out and put the original OEM chip back in, butthe lights are still on. What should I be looking for?

- Joe Califano

A: I would suggest checking the fuses first. The air bag system in your vehicle has 3 fuses. Two of the fuses can be found in the main fuse block. They’re marked “air bag fuse” & “clstr fuse”. The third fuse is located in the auxiliary fuse block and is marked “crnk-a/b fuse”. If one is bad replace it and see if the warning light goes out. If the light doesn’t go out or none of the fuses have failed then ask the air bag computer what’s its problem? This can be done with a computer scan tool or by grounding the K terminal of the diagnostic connector. The air bag computer, in turn, will flash/blink a diagnostic code. If you’re not sure what you’re doing in this area I would suggest having a technician perform that task. Grounding the wrong terminal on the connecter can make for additional problems that you may not want to deal with. I think you’re just a victim of circumstances or you did something silly when you were installing the hybrid computer chip and the fix will be as simple as a fuse.
