Q: The odometer in my ‘92 Ford Crown Vic
(both the trip and mileage odometer) occasionally stop working. Then after
a few days resume. Is this an expensive repair?....Tony
A: Expensive
repair? Not likely if it is the vehicle speed sensor that is failing.
The vehicle speed sensor, which is mounted in the transmission, creates
an electrical signal that is used by both the vehicle’s engine computer,
speed & odometer. Failure of this sensor is not uncommon, is not costly
and is easily replaced. It would be best to take your vehicle to the repair
facility when the problem is occurring. This allows diagnosis to confirm
the need of the parts being replaced.
