Jim Grant's Tech Tips
'01 Ford Escape, Transmission Shutter
Q:
I own a 01 4WD
Ford Escape. I have taken the truck to the dealer 3-4 times for something
Ford has identified as transmission shutter. Technical service recommended
change of fluid and reprogramming the computer. This was done but the
problem is not fixed, although the condition was slightly improved. The
Dealer acknowledges the problem, but claims the condition is not bad enough
to warrant teardown of the transmission and risk that Ford will not reimburse
for warranty work. It has 65,000 miles with a 75,000 ESP warranty plan.
Please advise.

A:
Dont you just
love that gray area stuff? Yeah, youve got a problem, but its
not bad enough yet. That just makes ya warm and fuzzy inside, doesnt
it? If the transmission is shuttering when shifting get it fixed. Why?
It is not going to get any better after the warranty is up. The only difference
is youre paying the dealer for the repair, instead of the ESP warranty
paying the dealer to perform the repair.
