Jim Grant's Tech Tips '95 Ford Windstar, Flashing Air Bag Light on
Q: I just had my engine replaced on my 95 Ford Windstar. Now my Airbag blinks 8 times, pauses, then 5 times. It does this a few times then comes on solid. I'd like to know what this code means before I take it back to the local mechanic. - Lon G. A: In your vehicles case when the ignition system is turned on the air bag computer performs a diagnostic check. If there is a system problem, the computer will flash the warning light in a series of flashes. After the computer has flashed the code 5 times the warning light will remain on. The code you provided is a # 85 which should be a reasonably easy code to correct. The air bag code # 85 means there is a ground connection problem with the crash sensor that is mounted on the left front of the radiator support. Because the engine was replaced, it is likely that the crash sensor is not bolted down tightly or there is grease or dirt between the bracket that holds the sensor where it is bolted to the radiator support. There are some other possibilities but my bet is there are some loose bolts or dirt involved.
