Q: When the engine is warmed up on my Honda Accord, a rattling sound can be heard from underneath between 3000 and 4500 RPM. It is worse in third gear with light throttle say if you are going up a hill at 40mph. The noise is similiar to shaking an aerosol spray can very fast!! Any ideas? - Gaz A: The most common cause for the problem/noise you’re describing is a loose or broken exhaust shield. Honda, Subaru, Toyota, Hyundai and many others suffer from this problem as age causes exhaust system’s shielding to rust and crack/break. Diagnosis is simple. You just get under the vehicle and hit the exhaust with your hand or a rubber hammer. The impact will usually get the offending shield to rattle. Just repair as necessary to correct.
