Jim Grant's Tech Tips ‘99 Mercury Sable, Windshield Washer Stalling Motor Q: My ‘99 Mercury Sable stalled at a light and the windshield wipers came on by themselves. I had used the windshield washer shortly before that. Is it possible, that there is a leak of washer fluid, which might be spraying causing the engine to stall? I was able to start it up right away and no problem since. - Mary A: If there is a leak in the windshield washer, it should be easy enough to find. But more importantly you want to be sure there are no leaks of windshield washer fluid in the engine compartment! Why is that? Most windshield washer fluids are flammable! If you were spraying washer fluid on a hot and running engine, you’re asking for some undesired attention. It should only take a few minutes to check for a leak in the washer system. If there are no leaks then I cannot relate it to the cause for stalling. As for the wipers operating on their own? Ford has had some problems with the multifunction switch. That's the turn signal, high & low beam, washer and other stuff switch all rolled into one switch hence, multifunction. If it gets to be a problem, an updated switch will likely be the fix.
