Jim Grant's Tech Tips
Mercedes
450SL, No Power
Q:
From a standing start my Mercedes 450SL has no power. Once I reach 30-40
mph no problem. On a steep hill it will just set there, the transmission
doesn't slip...... Jim
A:
My first impression, is that the transmission is not shifting all the
way down into low or first gear. A vehicle the size of a 450 SL would
be very sluggish when trying to accelerate from a stop if the transmission
is starting off in second gear. Try manually pulling the shifting lever
into low gear, then accelerate the vehicle. If acceleration improves then
there is a problem with the hydraulic valving in the transmission. The
valving in the transmission can be sticking due to deposits or wear. The
fix might be as simple as having the transmission fluid completely flushed,
clean transmission oil does wonders or it may require servicing of internal
components.
