91 Nissan Stanza, Speed-O Problems
Q: My daughter has a '91 Nissan Stanza that has a broken odometer. I read one of your articles on a '94 Mazda that the problem may have been due to a bad VSS. She would like to trade the car in the spring. How costly would it be to fix the odometer? Does Nissan have a VSS?.....Phyllis

A: Yes your Nissan Stanza has a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). The VSS is mounted in the transmission/transaxle and it creates an electrical signal in relationship to tire revolution. This electrical signal is used by the speedometer and odometer and by the vehicle’s computer. If the VSS has failed neither the speedometer (vehicle speed) nor odometer (distance traveled) would function. If one or the other is functioning then the problem is not with the VSS. Also, if the VSS has failed there would be a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) #14 for a Vehicle Speed Sensor problem stored in the vehicle’s computer.

As for cost of repairs? It takes just about a 1/2 hour to service the VSS and the cost is in the area of $100 new.
