Fuel Spill

In the United States alone over 38 million gallons of gasoline are wasted each year! Everyone that drives a vehicle contributes to this waste. Now, there are several ways that we waste gasoline. Simple steps like maintaining proper air pressure in the tires, driving at reasonable speeds and avoiding prolonged idling times are simple gas saving tips. But that's not how we're wasting over 38 million gallons of gasoline! In fact, the car engine doesn't even have to be running to contribute to this waste! The question is; what are people doing that creates this waste?

A. Leaving the oil filler cap off.
B. Parking in direct sunlight.
C. Filling the gas tank.
D. Leaving the gas cap off.

Each year millions of Americans waste gallons of gasoline without their car engine running. What are these people doing to create this waste? C. Filling the gas tank. Yes, 4 to 5 grams of fuel vapor per gallon are being wasted "lost" as gas is pumped into the vehicle’s gas tank. That's about to change.

The 1990 Clean Air Act will require that, by the year 2000, all cars must emit no more than 0.2 grams of gasoline vapors per gallon of fuel pumped.
