Jim Grant's Tech Tips '94 Honda Accord, Ticking Engine
Q: My 94 Honda Accord has a lot of ticking and its not the injectors. The engine was rebuilt by the dealer about 80k miles ago. I havent done anything to correct it yet. Do you have any suggestions? - Mark A: Your Honda Accord had two engine options, both engines having 16 valves, in that year. Depending on which engine your Honda has the solution to your ticking noise maybe a simple as a valve adjustment. Honda recommends checking the valve lash about ever 15k miles. On the VTEC engine, which has a more advanced valve control system there can be worn or sticking components that will create a ticking noise as well. If that is the case, there are specialized tools and diagnostic procedures that are required to inspect for problems. If youve been caring for your Honda correctly the solution may be as simple as suggested maintenance.
