‘95 Honda Passport, Tranny Fluid Too Old?
Q: I just bought a ‘95 Honda Passport 3.2L V6, 4x2. I noticed that the transmission fluid's color is changed to orangish, but clear with a little burnt smell. I was told by the dealer that this transmission does not have a drain plug and is really expensive to drop the pan and service the transmission so nobody does that. My question, should I change the transmission fluid, yes or no, if yes, what method 1) Drop the pan and fill it with the 2qts. 2) Complete flush. Will the transmission be able to handle this?
A:
The transmission flush is generally the way to go. Today’s transmission flush machines do not put any undue pressure on the system and do a good job of exchanging the fluid. Your Honda’s transmission holds about 9 to 10 quarts of oil. Depending on the fluid condition it will require in the area of 15 to 20 quarts to flush the system.
